She shares with us the incredible brain-gut connection and how stress is an emotion or feeling that is a product of a thought outside of ourselves that she calls “poopy thoughts” (said the GI doc!)
3 Main effects of stress on the gut:
#1—decreases the diversity of gut microbiome decreasing resilience and more susceptible to illness
#2—decreases the blood supply to gut damages mucosal barrier causing “leaky gut” associated with digestive diseases
#3—75% of immune system located in the gut is damaged by decreased microbiome increasing risk of autoimmune disease, cancer and many other illnesses
In addition:
*95% of our body’s serotonin (happy hormone) is produced in the gut. When the microbiome is damaged, serotonin levels decrease
*Gut is your 2nd brain and has it has it’s own nervous system = enteric nervous system explaining “gut feelings”
*Decreased blood flow to the gut decreases gut motility and digestion
*To be healthy, focus not only on physical fitness but include mental fitness and gut health
